Imagine a typical school day in a math classroom with a group of fourth grade students. The topic of the day is temperature. The activity centers around matching temperatures to the places where they are most likely to occur. I have several places on our map marked with sticky notes noting the city and country. Our map however was the only world map that I could find. It is a laminated 16 x 20 color copy. The phrase of the day is, "Can you see it?" The students shout helpful hints to our volunteer at the front who is struggling to match the place with the temperature. The problem though is that the map is so small that the countries all look relatively close to the equator with the exception of Antarctica. I realized that day, although not for the first time, that we need a large map! Each school in our county has a theme. Our theme is a school of global education. I often wonder how I am to teach my students about global education when we do not have a map and our globe is still lists USSR in bold letters! These students are in fourth grade now. They are more than ready to recognize where we are in the world. We discuss so many events that happen such as the recent Tsunami and we have no means to educate these children about the different parts of the world and help them to see where they are located.
