Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to 800 students that are located in a neighborhood that is in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English language learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

Seeing the excitement in kids' eyes when they learn something new makes teaching the best job ever.

My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning.

My Project

Part of the learning in fourth grade involves having spirited conversation, debate, and oral presentations. However, half the time, it is very difficult to hear them because they are wearing masks.

My students feel frustrated when they've shared out loud and then they are asked to repeat themselves.

They can hear me because we have voice amplifiers for teachers, but neither their peers or I can understand everything our presenters are saying. This wireless microphone and speaker system will allow my students to hear each other and become more engaged in debates and conversations, as well as the presentations given by their peers.
