Imagine my surprise, elation, enthusiasm and determination when my students provided me with a list of books that they wish were in my classroom library! Books! To Read! I couldn't believe it. Just recently I was struggling to find books to interest my reluctant readers.
I work in an extremely under-resourced middle school in Brooklyn, NY. Nearly all of my 7th and 8th graders came to me reading far below grade level. Reading to them was not only hard ... it meant frustration and failure. It took weeks for me just to get them to buy into reading at all.
After a lot of hard work my students are now EMERGING readers. They are no longer struggling, but are on the fast track to approaching grade level. All they need now is that extra push -- books that truly interest them. They asked me and now I am asking you.
