Imagine walking into a community where everyone knows your name and everyone is there to help you out and help you to reach your fullest potential. Now imagine that that community is with a group of 3, 4, and 5 year olds, and they all collaborate and support each other. That is the way that our classroom is run. We are a mixed classroom, meaning that we have both special education students and general education students within our room. Walking into our classroom you will never know which children are which because they all work together and support each other and are kind to each other.
We are a group of "bucket fillers" and we help and care for each other and we celebrate each other's successes.
Our families are very active and supportive of their child's education and they are a part of our classroom community!
My Project
I teach special education preschool to 3,4 and 5 year old children. Each month we pass out reading logs for the children to color in when they read a book at home with a family member. Each month I am only getting between 5 to 10 of these logs back, which is less than 50 percent. Many of our families are single parents, grandparents, foster parents etc.
I am asking for little reward prizes so that when the children work hard to get their families to take the time to read with them they can see that their hard work of getting their families to take the time is rewarded.
I think that if the children are able to get a "prize" for reading and returning the logs then they will encourage their families to support them in doing this more because they will really want to bring the log back to school.
Reading is so very important at this young age and I do not want any of my children to loose the opportunity of these reading minutes at this young age!
