Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project will impact almost all students at two different elementary schools, the schools share a campus and were formerly one school about two decades ago. During distance learning we have joined in collaboration so that we are able to meet our student and family’s needs as well as possible and provide as much staff support as possible. We are located in deep East Oakland and because of distance learning, many families have a computer in their home for the first time!
Many teachers were so nervous to meet their students through a computer on the first day and worried about how it would feel to develop a bond through a wi-fi connection.
It has been so heartwarming to see their personalities and curiosity shine through despite these strange circumstances. Students have shown up every day, bright and early in their video call “classroom,” ready to try their best. As teachers we have a responsibility to spot inequity in our classrooms and work to remove those barriers. Distance Learning has created many, many inequities that we are still working to understand, not being able to hear your teacher speak is unacceptable!
My Project
Distance learning has been full of new challenges and one of those challenges is the noise level that occurs when an entire family is trying to learn, work, and live in the same home! It has been a long process connecting students to computers and wi-fi so they are able to engage with their classmates and teachers.
Now that almost all students are connected we have a new challenge: students being able to hear their teacher!
It’s very difficult when students have siblings who are also doing a zoom lesson with their teacher at the same time. Sometimes a student will un-mute their microphone and I can hear my colleague in the background, teaching my student's sibling. Students have expressed that one of the difficulties working from home is “being able to hear my teacher.” Distance learning, unfortunately, has been a very inequitable process. Help us provide tools so that our students can thrive!
