My Students

I would like to say that I when come to work and am greeted by a sea of shining faces, but that would be an untruth. The fact is that my students battle just to be present at school. Their lives are often difficult and heartbreaking. Many have overcome problems that we as adults have a hard time imagining. But for 45 minutes a day, they come to my class and give me their best effort, and for this they deserve to have engaging lessons.

Writing is hard work on several levels.

There is risk. They have to pull out their personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences and risk sharing them with someone else--a hard thing to do under normal circumstances, but for my kids who have parents in prison, live in generational poverty, are foster kids, or just lack the life experiences that make writing interesting this is often a humiliating task to complete.

My Project

With new technology, students have the option of using headphones with their computers. Students can access videos, and other noisy applications, without disturbing their classmates. Some of my teenagers, especially those who seem to need the headphones the most, are the least able to afford them. It is often necessary for teachers to have a class set of headphones so that every kid has what they need to be successful.

We use headphones whenever we are working on the computer so that our instructional aids do not interfere with the learning of others.

My ESL kids can use an auditory dictionaries without their neighbors knowing. My dyslexic students can listen while they read along. No one is left out.
