Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Listening to a story is an excellent opportunity for my students to improve their pronunciation and fluency skills. Their favorite part of the day is when we read aloud. This is why they would benefit from having a listening center in the classroom.
My students are a group of very happy, active kids who are eager to learn new things everyday.
We are a Title I and Renaissance school, meaning over 90% of our children qualify for free and reduced price lunches. The majority of our students lack English fluency and confidence in mastering the English language because they come from Spanish speaking homes. Many of the families are migrant farm workers who are not able to provide the students with the support they need to be able to succeed in school because of the language barrier. Even though coming to school can become a challenge for many of them, they work very hard to achieve their goals and expectations, and our school has achieved an A grade for many consecutive years.
I would like to help my students learn by providing new and exciting experiences that will keep them engaged in school for a long time.
My Project
During daily centers students participate in a variety of activities that help them develop their reading and writing skills. With listening center complete with headphones, read-alongs, and a storage unit requested, we will create a Listening Center where students can listen to a story as they read it in a book. This will greatly help improve their listening, pronunciation and fluency skills.
My students and their families are speakers of other languages which complicates the learning of speaking and reading in English.
They need to have as many opportunities to practice their listening, pronunciation and fluency skills. With a Listening Center in our classroom they can have one more chance to practice and get better in the language.
