I work with students in grades 7-12 who have communication impairments, in addition to other special needs. My students are eager to learn and to fit in with their peers. They want to be invited to after school activities, to sit with friends at lunch and to 'hang out' like other students.
I believe communication is the key to building positive relationships, positive relationships help build strong communities, which in turn help create a better world.
All of my students struggle with receptive and expressive communication and being able to communicate their needs, wants, and ideas, including the ability to communicate critical information related to safety. Some of my students have difficulty learning new concepts and benefit from being exposed to a variety of teaching methods.
My Project
A Catch Box Lite microphone is a throw-able microphone connected to a classroom speaker system. Many times students with a communication impairment are reluctant to raise their hand in order to make a verbal contribution to the classroom discussion. They may know the correct answer but are afraid to participate. They might be worried that other students may not understand or hear them correctly. The Catch Box Lite will amplify their voices in a fun and interactive way. I am certain using a Catch Box Lite microphone will help my students increase their participation during academic discussions while also increase communicative confidence.
Each student deserves to have his/her voice heard!
