My students are in the 7th grade English Language Arts class. Their ages range from 12-14. It is a heterogeneous classroom with a diverse group of students from various socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnic groups, and academic levels. At least 60% of my students are from low socio-economic backgrounds. Each year, I have to purchase many of the supplies that my students use in the classroom in order to ensure that each student has equal access to materials and supplies
I teach a wide range of academic levels.
Approximately 40 percent of the students that I teach students are exceptional students with learning disabilities, 20 percent are academically gifted, 10 percent are English Language Learners who struggle with language barriers, and 30 percent range between below grade level to grade level.
My Project
Discussions and collaboration are a major part of the English Language Arts' classroom. However, voice levels and participation are problems that I have found that significantly impact the discussion, lesson, and activity.
I have found that students are eager to participate in discussions when they can incorporate physical activity and movement, as well as be heard.
The Qball throwable microphone and coordinating speakers will encourage my students to participate and keep them actively engaged. In whole-class​ discussions and Socratic Seminars, students will be sharing their opinions and be heard. Aftwards, students can throw to microphone to the next speaker.
