We are a culturally diverse high school in a metropolitan school district with just under 4,000 students enrolled. While the school as a whole has 40% of the student body qualifying for free and reduced-price meals, about 80% of students in my classes qualify. All students in my classes are part of the special education program and are on a diploma track. My ultimate goal is to help students earn the credits they need to graduate from high school.
As Jane Revell and Susan Norman so aptly stated, "There are no difficult students - just students who don't want to do it your way." I accept my students where they are right now and strive to help them close the knowledge gap.
Many of my students have had discipline issues and might be behind academically due to removal from general education classes. To do this I need to first meet their individual needs, providing a safe space for them to learn invaluable coping strategies to make them successful in school and in life.
My Project
Having durable, reliable, cleanable headphones for the class will increase my students’ productivity and help them reach their academic goals. This grant will be used to buy a class set of thirty over-ear headphones. These headphones are easy to clean, durable, and can be labeled with my name and room number. I teach an online credit recovery program for special education students that allows them to learn at their own pace. Having reliable headphones allows students to use the computer-based system to its fullest potential. With the noise-canceling component of these headphones, I will be able to instruct individual students without disruption to other students in the room.
I believe the computer-based program is a vital resource that not only helps our special education students to recover credits, it is raising our students’ graduation rates by providing students with a learning opportunity outside the traditional classroom setting.
Students in this class receive instruction from me as well as the computer; the computer has read aloud capabilities and instructional videos embedded in its software. I have found that many students, without headphones, will not take advantage of these capabilities due to fear of embarrassment or not wanting to distract other students in the class. Many of our students do not have their own headphones or their headphones are not compatible with our computers.
