I teach a special needs kindergarten/first grade class for students with varying disabilities. Our school is in a rural part of Raleigh, North Carolina. The students are bused from various neighborhoods that are not based at our school. Three of my ten students are on free/reduced lunch. This puts our class at 30% receiving free/reduced lunch. I would like to have an fm system which is a microphone and speaker system. This type of system has been useful in assisting students with disabilities focus on the teacher or person speaking since the voice is amplified. I have used an fm system in the past. All of my students showed improved listening skills when the speaker was using the fm system. Unfortunately it was a borrowed system and I no longer have access to it. If I were to receive the fm system the students would be able to hear me no matter where I was in the room without having to raise my voice. Using a soft tone of voice throughout the day is important in educating students who have special needs. The students would also be able to hear softly read stories at rest time which is relaxing and educational. The best thing is that the students would be able to be "the teacher" when it is their turn to talk by using the microphone. (This is a very motivating activity.) To benefit the students I would need an fm system with a microphone and a speaker along with rechargeable batteries and a charger. The students can only be as successful as their education and if they can't hear what is being taught, then they aren't learning.
