Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low performing urban middle school where we are focused and committed to building community and relationships that so many of our students are lacking. We have 100% reduced or free lunch and most parents struggle to provide basic needs. With such a diverse population from all areas of the world including the Middle East, South America, Asia, and Africa, it can be difficult for our students to find common ground and learn to work together cohesively despite their differences.
Our students carry a loving, positive attitude for success harnessing their talents and skills to reach their personal and educational goals.
To help reach these goals, we as a staff pour into our students' interests through real-world experiences when we can. Tangible, realistic, purposeful learning is our key to reaching them and engaging their minds to ensure they matter.
My Project
As 8th graders, my students can sometimes become quite distracted, whether from one another or noises outside the classroom door. Limiting these distractions when full attention to detail is needed, and focusing on the task at hand will help the students learn strategies necessary for successful learning. The headphones will do just that.
Utilizing the headphones in the classroom will give the students the opportunity to focus on the auditory lessons without classroom distractions.
Students who are second language learners and with learning disabilities will benefit as well when interference is limited. This gives all students an equal chance at learning when the distractions are restricted.
