The students in my school deal with learning, behavioral, and/or emotional disabilities while living in a group home and trying to learn. It's impressive what they are able to accomplish in the face of such adversity.
All of my students have special needs.
They have experienced trauma in their lives and struggle with basic needs, let alone regularly attending school. My school serves students with a range of abilities, and the educators work hard to make school both fun and challenging. The student population has a high turnover rate throughout the year, so it is difficult to describe a typical student, but I teach math to students in 6-12 grade. All students receive free lunch. Our technology is severely outdated, so we are resigned to mostly working out of textbooks. We don't even have wifi! There is so much that my students could do if they had the same opportunities as students at nearby public schools. Let's work together to give them a chance to shine!
My Project
The headphones that we have are in rough shape after daily use. Without headphones for each computer, students are easily distracted by the sounds emanating from other computers.
Every day, students try to get the newest headphones before anyone else can.
Those headphones are universal favorites, but this shouldn't be the case. Not only do my students need more sets of "favorite" headphones to complete their daily computer work, they also will need headphones to complete standardized testing in a few months. We average 1 set of headphones to 3 computers. Help us get a 1:1 ratio for the entire school!
