Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My inquisitive hardworking 5th graders attend a large public elementary school in the South Bronx. Many of my students live in temporary homes, are in foster care, or live in multi-family apartment homes. My students are all below grade level with a wide range of skills.
Despite any hardships that they face out of school, my students are genuinely excited to learn.
They are full of enthusiasm and a love for learning. As their teacher I want to provide them with the tools and experiences that they need to be successful in life.
My Project
Thanks to the support to several of our DonorsChoose projects, our class has acquired 10 Chromebooks! We have been integrating them to many of our activities throughout the school day. We have been using them to research, type essays, create presentations, learn to code with Google, and read books online using Raz-Kids. As we prepped for the NYS Math State exam we also used them as a math station where they watched tutorials of me solving math problems.
We are now facing a different problem, the noise level.
It is a bit difficult for students to use the Chromebooks when they are each working on something different or at different paces. For example: as they listen to books on their level on Raz-Kids, it is difficult for them discern what is coming out of their Chromebook speaker or what is coming out of their neighbor's Chromebook speaker.
Headphones will enhance my students' individualized learning experience with Chromebooks. They will be able to listen to books and view tutorials at their own pace.
