My Students

I teach at a school with 100% free lunch. Many students only receive food while in school. Children come from homes that at times do not have basic needs such as electricity and water. Older children have responsibilities such as watching younger siblings and taking care of the home while parents work.

Building community and future leaders are important qualities at our school.

Students have so many factors that hinder learning, issues such as abuse, drug use, neglect, poor living conditions, lack of food, and lack of clothing. Most students live in single parent homes, and the absence of one parent creates much stress that is sometimes hard to bear. Even with all these issues, students do want to learn.

My Project

English language learners have a difficult time in the classroom. Many times they do not understand what is being said and how to reply to certain questions.

Many students sit in class and are afraid to participate in fear of not being heard or understood.

This does not help students to grow as learners and also hinders their self esteem. Many opportunities are lost for learning and community building.

The Qball is a ball with a microphone inside. Students can throw this ball to each other to communicate their thoughts and ideas. This turns discussion into a fun interactive time. Everyone will want to talk during discussion time and this will, in return, increase students’ self esteem and confidence.
