Ms. Thompson from Snellville GA is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 6 headsets with microphones to dictate their writing and to bring excitement back into the creative writing process.

Each school year, I receive a class of diverse learners who have such an eagerness for learning. And each year, I find myself looking for ways to keep each one of them eager and engaged. This is especially true for those students who struggle academically because of learning disabilities.
As a teacher of several students with learning disabilities, I find myself looking for new ways to address individual learning needs in engaging and meaningful ways.
Many students with special needs are reluctant learners. Traditional paper-and-pencil learning activities are often inadequate in addressing their needs.
Many of my students with special needs have limited fine motor abilities. This limits their ability to grasp a pencil adequately to write legibly. Using voice-enabled technologies, particularly the usage of headphones with built-in microphones helps special needs students who have these fine motor difficulties to concentrate on the quality of their writing as opposed to the quantity of words. For example, dictating their writing will give my students ways to create informational/non-fiction pieces without the stress that is oftentimes evoked when trying to spell scientific language (i.e., metamorphosis, larvae, Chrysalis). During the beginning stages of writing, students will choose from several science prompts that are stored in files on the computer or found on writing/picture prompt apps like Tell About This. They will then use their headphones with built-in mics to dictate their writing with a speech-to-text app like SpeechNote. The app allows them to speak into the microphone which will in turn type the words they speak into a file on the classroom computer. In this way, students who struggle with writing and/or spelling are not limited by the stress of illegible handwriting or misspelled words. They are freed from this burden and can concentrate on the creative aspect of writing.
