I have 25 amazing students in a Title I School. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives. However, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My students need headphones to hear and complete online programs that help increase their skill levels in content areas.
Having headphones/earbuds is a must school supply, but most of my students cannot supply anything more than dollar store earbuds which only last from a few days to a couple of weeks before I hear, "I can't hear anything anymore" or "My headphones broke". It saddens me that my students cannot have what they need.
My Project
By having good quality headphones in my classroom that will not break after a day or two and I can use every year, my students will have what they need to master skills for the standards they need to achieve in first grade while using computer programs such as IXL and Learning Farm where they have to listen to and practice the skills that are being taught in whole group instruction.
All my students deserve to have the school supplies they need to help them achieve success in the classroom and in the future.
I do not want my students to have to miss out on learning practice because their dollar store earbuds broke and they just cannot afford to buy a good quality pair on their own.
