"I can't hear!" is the phrase I hear most often when trying to set up listening centers in my classroom. My earphones are so old the covers are falling apart. Encouraging my students to sharing one ear bud each to listen together to audio books is not practical.
My students are typical third graders: fun, energetic, creative, and curious.
Our school is an older school and lacking in upgraded technology. Through the use of grants, individual teachers are able to provide resources to our students. My students love the fact we have Kindles in the classroom to use during reading center time. Audio books and reading apps have greatly improved the motivation to read among my struggling readers. By listening to good pacing and expression, my students are able to learn what it means to be a fluent reader.
My Project
By providing my students with new earphones and splitters I will be able to increase student participation during reading time in my classroom. This on task time for students will allow me to pull small groups for formal individualized reading instruction. Allowing 4 students at a time to listen to an audio book rather than 1 will engage more students.
Establishing listening centers in my classroom will allow students of all reading abilities access to good literature.
Having them listen to good expression and pacing will model what fluent readers sound like. Students are also expected to listen carefully to be able to respond to comprehension questions about the book. Building listening skills in students is essential to being a good reader and student.
