My students need the Spotlight On Literary Elements and a whisper phone to increase their love of reading by reading fluently and with understanding.
Dr. Seuess once said that, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." My students hear this quote on almost a daily basis, and we work hard each day to make sure that we are readers that are going places!
As a fourth grade teacher, I have students that read at a vareity of levels, but it is important for them all to have success in my classroom.
In order to acheieve this, we have small group reading time each day where they will get one on one time with me. They love this time, and they really are able to see the growth that they have throughout the year.
Although I have always used small group reading with my students, I have always had trouble getting them to focus on their own reading, as well as I have had trouble focusing in on one student at time in a risk-free environment. The whisper phone system will allow for me to "dial-in" to one student at a time, provide them with immediate feedback on their reading, and will allow for them to have the comfort of knowing that we are the only two listening to the reading time. As we are reading together, we learn many skills imperative for reading comprehension. These skills are often hard to teach without an authentic example of the skill. The book set will provide my students with immediate practice of the skill, and we get them a chance to read and share stories they are of interest with them. These books provide my students with an opportunity that they may not otherwise have because of their skill building approach!
Using these books, with the whisper phone system, will allow my students to fell success that they have perhaps never imagined.
It will allow them to both make gains in fluency and reading comprehension, that is sure to take them places! They will be a glowing example of just what successful reading instruction can do!
