Can you hear me now? - Listening Center for reading literacy
My students need a listening center! In a class of 23, whose ability vary from gifted to remedial, a listening center would help my lower students read fluently.
Reading is the basis of ALL learning! If a student can't read, they can't do word math problems, fill out a job application, enjoy a good book on a rainy afternoon or follow the directions when playing a game. I love to read, and want to pass this love on to my students.
We are a Title 1 school in Florida, with 72% of our students on free/reduced lunches.
Our school is only 2 years old, and we have approximately 65% minority students. Our school is on the side of town where it is a very low SES bracket, and businesses are failing frequently.
I'm a firm believer that a main reason our students don't test well on the FCAT is because they lack ability and confidence in their reading skills. Sure, there are some real learning disabilities, but I believe they can be countered by teaching children to love reading and to find the joy in a good book. My kids range in ability from almost gifted to learning on a kindergarten level, and we just don't have the resources to supply my classroom with materials that will foster fluent reading and small group centers.
My Project
I'd love to have a listening center where the students who need remedial reading lessons can follow along in a book while the book is read to them on tape or CD. This will help them associate letters and words with sounds, and help them with their phonics and word building skills.
I love teaching.
I love to see the look on childrens' faces when they "get" the concept of the lesson! A listening center would help them (and any future students I will have) learn to read in yet another way, in addition to the phonics, chunking, and sight word recognition they learn now.
