Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am a math support specialist teacher in a rural high school. The school has just under 1,000 students who range from 9th to 12th graders in courses from Algebra I up to Advanced Mathematical Decision Making. The math inclusion class setting allows students who need extra support in math to receive the services without having to be pulled out of the classroom. The support classes are for those students who need a smaller classroom setting with 1:1 assistance.

Current district data indicates that students entering into the 9th grade struggle with mathematical problem-solving.

As a new teacher, my goal is to increase student achievement in the math department.

My Project

My students are required to take assessments and online lessons on a computer. Given the population of students in my classroom. they have trouble focusing and staying on task. Our issue is, with all the computers on at once, it causes a large amount of distraction to my students. When they turn them down low, they miss valuable information. They can not focus on their lesson either way.

By supplying my students with headphones, they will be able to focus on their online assignments and assessments.

Giving the students the opportunity to focus on their work will ultimately increase their work performance.
