Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Elementary Music to classes Kindergarten through 5th grade. The students in my school come from varied backgrounds, but most of them share a love for music. They quickly learn to sing, dance, play instruments or whatever I throw at them.
Since we are a Title I school with a majority receiving free or reduced lunch, most share something else in common: working parents who don't have the resources or time to expose their children to extracurricular activities that enrich students' growth.
Things like music lessons or taking them to a live symphonic, dance, or theater performance. That's why participating in the Disney Musicals in Schools program is such an amazing opportunity for these students to see the possibilities of what the world has to offer.
That's where the school can make a real difference. We strive to introduce our kids to as many opportunities as possible, whether it is in the classroom or on stage, through performing in a play or learning to play piano on our keyboard lab, or by seeing live symphony, opera or theater presentations.
My Project
As is the case at many elementary schools, our stage is located in the cafetorium, a quaint word for having a stage at the front of our cafeteria. Since we started doing the Disney Musicals in School last year, we have been adding equipment little by little whenever we can.
These microphones will help us to achieve our goal of making sure our student performers can be heard by the audience members, an important goal in light of the fact that our students have been learning their lines and practicing diligently for months.
The number of cast members with speaking or singing solo parts is very large for The Lion King, making the need for the microphones even greater.
Between the cost of fabric for costumes, materials to build sets and props, and art supplies to decorate them, our fundraising budgets are spread quite thin. Please help us to share the story of love that the Lion King tells with our whole school and community!
