This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are talented, outgoing, and hard working. They are adaptable because they have to be. I am the proud band director at an inner-city urban arts high school where my job also includes the non-performing side of things: music theory. Our students have never known a world with out the internet, but our 21st century requirements have outpaced our 20th century setting.

Access to technology is critical as we strive to build a community of musicians who can flourish in the 21st Century.

Learning to perform and see yourself as a musician happens quickly if you have a 21st century musician's tools.

My Project

Our music students use an aging piano lab that has 30 pianos and only a few sets of working headphones. Because our lab is located between two social studies classrooms, we can't play the pianos out loud, so students without headphones can't play at all.
