Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We could dig it, if we had the proper tools! I am a special education teacher in a high need district of New York. In my fourth grade inclusion classroom, students with special needs learn alongside their peers. My students are wonderful and energetic about learning, but sometimes financial restraints limit our abilities.
My budding scientists love learning out in the field. I like to take the children outside to make observations and collect data. Together we explore and learn about our community and the ecosystems that exist in it. The children love learning this way. It gives them a connection to the Earth and a sense of pride in their town. I want my students to understand the world around them. I want them to see all the wonder our island has to offer. Unfortunately, scientists need tools and our resources are limited.
The learning that could take place with the right tools could be outrageous! With binoculars, and field guides the children could learn to recognize local plant and wildlife. With graduated trowels, they can dig in the dirt, and measure their depth, and take data on soil quality. With safety thermometers they can record the weather every day, and discuss temperature trends. Having these tools will empower the children to learn about the area we live in, it will also make them curious about regions that have different ecosystems then us. The ideas they get while doing these projects will open they minds and expand their horizons… and that’s the whole point, I don’t aim to just teach, my goal is to inspire.
Every day I try to instill in my students a love for our planet and its resources. With your help I can teach them lessons about the Earth that will make them eco-friendly for the rest of their lives. One day one of my remarkable students could be the president of the United States of America, you want your future president to love our planet, right?
