I teach Spanish 1 at a Title 1 high school in Arizona. I generally have between 39-42 students in each of my four classes. Although it is a Spanish 1 class, Spanish is the only world language taught at this high school and students range in proficiency from beginning to advanced.
I want to create an excitement for learning a second language; to instill a sense of "I can do this" and make the learning process more interesting and fun!
My school district has a large population of students with learning and behavioral issues and from low-income families. Many of the students come from a Hispanic background but know very little about the Spanish language. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the world with my students.
My Project
I am incorporating comprehensible input in my teaching strategy. There is a strong focus on reading which helps to grow vocabulary and an understanding of grammar. I am building a classroom library to encourage my Spanish 1 students to learn a second language through comprehensible reading....stories that are written at a level that the beginner student can fully understand.
More books mean a wider variety of topics and greater success in enticing those "not so Interested" readers!

With the large calendar I will be able to post daily lessons. It is important for students to have a clear idea of each day's objectives Instead of coming into class and asking "what are we doing today?".
