Here at Lafayette Elementary, we have a unique program. We have 90 children, from grades 3 through 8 that are learning how to play violins, violas and cellos. These students comprise the largest string orchestra in the Chicago Public School system. We have performed at Orchestra Hall in downtown Chicago and last year we received a Superior rating (highest possible) at the Chicago Fine Arts Concert featuring over 12 different schools. Keeping this program viable and supplied is a financial burden that no one organization can easily deal with. Our sources of funding include the Merit School of Music, The Union League Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago, and of course, Lafayette Elementary. The vagaries of public school annual budgets make our contributions very difficult to anticipate. Therefore, I am desperately seeking out alternative funding sources to supply us with carrying straps for our string instruments. Every little bit helps us meet our needs...and keep children asking questions like "Can we play Mozart today?"
