Next year I will have a classroom of 5th grade self-contained gifted and talented students in the largest inner-city school district in Ohio. My students are part of our district's academically gifted and talented program. My classroom is diverse with students coming from all parts of the district.
Students learn best when instruction and learning match their learning style.
My readers make connections between the past and the present while seeking to change the future. Many are vocally passionate about the books they are reading and want to read more.
My students see the value in tough conversations and are not afraid to share their views. The compassion and empathy they have for others are amazing. So much of this has been built through their experiences with diverse literature.
My Project
Every year I provide my students with newly published children's novels. Their quest is to see if they can choose that years Newbery Award winner. This is a challenge, since there are so many good books that are published each year.
My students use the Newbery criteria, that the Newbery committee uses, to analyze the books that they are reading and see which books fit the criteria.
My students can't stop talking about the books that they are reading and they encourage others to read the same books so that they can talk about them. Even my struggling readers challenge themselves to read the books their friends are reading. This project has joined my class together and I am excited to do it again next year!
