Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in Westtown just three miles from Lake Michigan in Chicago. Most of my students are Hispanic and are interested in learning about another culture. We searched for pen pals and found a class in Chinatown that was interested in exchanging letters.
Exchanging letters will help my second grade students improve their writing skills. The second grade students at Otis School are eager to write and create stories. As an extra incentive for writing, I will provide each student with a blank book form. The students will write many sloppy copies of their story. They will edit the story and produce beautiful drawings. When they are ready to publish this book, they will use their hardback blank book form for publishing.
My students would like to write their books and meet their Chinatown pen pals in Millenium Park and read their books to them as we sit by the big water fall with many faces.
There would be many benefits to my second grade class if they were to meet St. Theresa's first grade class at Millenium Park and share their books one-on-one with the students. Their writing and reading skills will improve. Reading scores will soar. Imagination, artwork and creativity will improve. Students will gain self-esteem and be ready to face the challenges in school as they show their pen pals how they wrote and published a book.
We need to break the barriers between cultures. It is very positive for two different cultures to get together and share. This program will last until the end of the year and we will be forever friends with our Chinese Pen Pals. I am sure that we will all find out that we are more alike than we are different.
