Help me give my students a shed and storage boxes to store supplies in (our supplies are currently in a book room), a sink so we can wash and have water outside, and a shovel for cleaning.
I am a second grade teacher in a Title I school. I teach in a small community in Georgia. Many of our students don't get the opportunity for memorable experiences due to low income. I truly believe that a student's best chance at learning is through experiencing it first hand.
We have been blessed to be able to teach our students through many hands-on learning opportunities involving our chickens and our chicken coop.
Over the years our students have designed a chicken coop, designed and built a feeding and watering system, and designed and built a playground specifically meant for our chickens, and even incubated, candled, and hatched chicks!!
My Project
Our second graders love our chickens. We are out at our chicken coop every day taking care of them, cleaning the coop, making sure they have clean food go eat and water to drink, and learning from them. Our students have been a part of so many educational learning opportunities because of our chickens. They have opened so many doors for us as teachers and have opened our students' eyes to a new type of learning. Our students are able to learn hands-on and are learning while doing rather than being lectured to in the front of a classroom. That being said, with all of these great learning opportunities comes some constraints. We are in desperate need of a storage shed and storage boxes. Our students have nowhere to store our materials for the chickens. Our materials are currently in a book room that is shared by another grade level, and we are running out of room as well as being in the way. We also have no water outside at our coop which makes it difficult to get clean water to sanitize supplies or use hot water to wash hands, so we are asking for a utility sink to put outside the coop. We have been making do for the last couple of years, but now we are putting more chickens into the coop which will require even more cleaning and sanitizing. We are also asking for a new shovel to help with the cleaning of the coop. The one we have now is falling apart. We need these things to keep our chickens and students healthy so our second graders can continue to learn from these charming animals.
