Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching kindergarten at my school for 17 years. Every day, I am greeted by 22 wonderful, smiling faces. I feel lucky to have a job that I love. However, this year has been especially challenging. In October, our community was ripped apart by the Sonoma fires. Fortunately, none of my students lost their homes, but many had to evacuate for several weeks. School is the one place that they can come on a a daily basis and know that they are safe! My school population is very diverse and challenging, but I wouldn't have it any other way! We are a Title I School with 94% of our student population qualifying for free and reduced-priced lunch. Many of my students do not even come with a backpack or supplies. I usually spend a significant amount of my own money buying supplies for the entire year.
My Project
This year, my grade level has been incorporating new science and social studies unit into our classroom. My children are especially interested in science. I would love to be able to meet their needs and provide them with more science opportunities.
My goal is to set up a portable science cart that can be used inside and outside the classroom with different options and themes. The magnets and magnet supplies would be a great start to for children to explore the wonders of magnetism as they make magnets float in midair or see how magnetic poles work.
We spend a good amount of time in our school garden. I would love to bring the table top magnifiers out to the garden to let kids explore plants, insects, vegetables up close and personal. I cannot wait to hear the excitement in their voices as they shout, "Look at this!"
