This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like to have a subject in school you didn't like? Well, I don't want my class to feel this way about reading. I love reading, so besides the enthusiasm I will be providing I would like to have proper materials to use, to make reading time exciting.
I teach a bilingual class in which the students are classified as mentally retarded.
I have the unique opportunity for 45 minutes daily to teach these children with special needs their second language, English. Many of them are from low income homes, and some are even in foster care. These children enjoy learning when there are a variety of engaging activities. It is hard to accomplish this when there is no reading equipment in my classroom. They would enjoy manipulating letter tiles to create words and to sit on the rug listening to me read a story and “dissect” it on our new “mobile reading center” which includes a magnetic board and pocket chart to highlight key words.
My Project
I love English, reading books and teaching others how to read. I intend to make my lessons fun and entertaining; however, without essential tools it can be very difficult. I would love to keep my students engaged for the entire 45 minutes; this would entail changing activities every so often to retain their attention span. My ideal lesson would have my students sitting on the rug and listening to a story read up high from the Mobile Reading Center, then I would highlight key words and show them to the class on the pocket chart which is right below the book stand. After, my students would manipulate the letter tiles to create words we just learned which can be done on the magnetic lap board or standing board. I am very excited for these items to be a staple in my classroom!
If you value the importance of reading and making reading enjoyable, then please donate.
Donate, because your generosity will be allowing my bilingual special needs students a chance to get pleasure from their reading time daily!
