Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I teach all come from inner-city, low-income households. It is a self-contained, special education classroom, serving students with significant emotional and behavioral concerns. All of my students have experienced trauma, which makes learning a challenge.
The students that come to my classroom are from many different schools and are all in my classroom for 3 years.
In the time they spend with me they develop socially, emotionally, developmentally, and academically. The hope is to stabilize these children so that they can be integrated into the regular education children eventually. Special education is always the last place money goes in the schools, and that is one of the reasons I am asking for your help. Also, these students are extremely challenging to engage in learning due to the trauma in their own lives. Having these special tools to bring learning to life would help engage them in a way they have not been exposed to yet. I want to provide them with technology to excite them and widen their educational experience. Due to family situations, I am not able to post a picture of the children in my room as it is confidential.
My Project
My classroom is made up of 12 children with severe social emotional and behavioral disabilities. These children have a very hard time communicating which makes learning incredibly stressful for them. In order to learn you must take risks and make mistakes, this also is challenging for my students. My hope with this project is to let them speak, take risks and make mistakes through the voice of puppets. This will hopefully give them opportunities to not only learn more academically ,but build their social communication and improve their emotional health. You cannot learn without mistakes and getting my students to feel comfortable enough to make them, just may take the help of a puppet!
