Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They are funny. They can even be annoying, especially when they ask me each morning, "What are we going to do today?" Yet, I am reminded that they are in middle school, and these are some of the most challenging times of their lives as they begin to grow into their adult selves and expand their understanding of themselves and each other.

Each student is a work in progress, and in three year's time, they will not even recognize how far they have journeyed.

My Project

Good reading skills underpin all academic success and will factor heavily in who does and who does not earn a high school diploma. I have asked for a number of books that are highly engaging and will help foster a love of reading.

If my grade seven students began to develop a love for reading and skills in being analytical and critical around language and ideas, I will be providing them with the tools to succeed in high school and beyond.

I have picked books that have characters with BIG PROBLEMS and issues that confound us. There are no right and wrong answer. Just themes to debate and issues to ponder. These books will allow my students to form opinions and experience the emotions and struggles of others while developing compassion and understanding. The books will be used to create book clubs, where students can discuss the issues the characters face and analyze the topics through open ended questions. The students will then write narratives about their books by creating alternate endings, writing the back story for selected characters and/or creating another chapter to the book.

They won't want to put the book down.
