My Students

There's no other feeling than finding that book and that fictional world that you just CONNECT with! My students are learning in an urban school district. 90% of them receive free or reduced lunch. The majority of students coming to me this year are significantly below grade level in reading. My job is not only to close this gap, but to help them find that world that they want to escape to. Whether it be the wizarding world, a parallel universe, or a coral castle under the sea, I want my students to cling to their books and beg for the next one in the series.

My Project

My students are slowly but surely becoming little book worms. It hasn’t been easy, but the trick has been finding titles that grab their attention with storylines that keep them reading until the end. My goal is to have my classroom library look like a bookstore! I want that space to have multiple copies of these special books. During independent reading, my students will choose these books to snuggle down with and enjoy. My hope is that they will enjoy them so much that they seek more books in the same series, or at least by the same author. We are building habits that will stay with them as adult readers.
