This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are exposed to several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning knowing that in the future I will be needing their art skills, problem-solving skills, engineering and math skills, and science and discovery skills that will help our community combat any challenges.
Our 5th graders are going camping for the first time and need basic necessities such as camping kits and snacks.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience in school.
My Project
Camping is part of the school curriculum. Some schools say going to camp is compulsory, but in reality, parents have the last word on deciding whether or not their child will attend camp. Some of the reasons of the student in my school cannot go on camping is due to the family's low economic status and it always gives me teary eyes watching other students go camping and some stayed in school. School camp is a fantastic opportunity for children to develop new skills, friendships, and interests. This year teachers in the fifth-grade team are looking for ways in which we can include all children in our camping trip this Spring 2020. It's a once of a lifetime experience before they move up to the middle school years.
My students need your extraordinary support for camping sleeping bags, snacks, and a hygiene kit.
School camping is a great opportunity to develop a range of social skills. Most activities at camping involve teamwork, which is great to strengthen established friendships and also to develop new friendships by connecting with children they don’t regularly talk with at school. Through bonding activities, children develop supportive relationships not only with different children but also with their teachers. At camp, children have the opportunity to learn about acceptance, caring, and understanding.
