Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If they can "write it," they can "read it." It is my goal to enhance my kindergarteners' early reading skills through creative writing. I teach in a Title 1 school, which means that the majority of my students come from low-income families. That typically means that their homes are not literacy rich. I feel it is my responsibility as their teacher to provide them with as many reading and writing experiences possible to motivate them to want be good readers and writers. It goes hand in hand.
Camp Write Well is a week-long writing camp used to assist kindergarten students in building creative writing skills and interest. The classroom is set up to look like a campground and during the course of the week, the students are given the opportunity to write in "Tent City" by the "Campfire," in the "Picnic Area," "Down at the Lake, and "In the Woods." The classroom is set up to represent all five areas. Kindergarten students writing levels are graded on a rubric from 1-5. After Camp Write Well last year the students writing scores increased at least 1 level and for 7 out of 17 students it increased two levels. We are given basic supplies for daily instruction from either the school or the district. Anything extra is purchased by me. These contributions will aid in purchasing supplies for Camp Write Well without having to spend my personal funds.
As my students begin writing stories, we will practice editing and revision. We will be using more than the normal amount of supplies during Camp Write Well. We need more writing supplies to make Camp Write Well a success.
Your contributions will aid in building a firm foundation for kindergarten students. This is where it all begins. If they are strong readers and writers by the time they leave kindergarten, the possibilities for success are endless!!
