My students are highly energetic and full of energy. They are eager to learn and try new things. I follow the philosophy of Fred Rogers in that play is the stuff learning is made of. Play is really the work of childhood. It is how children learn about their world. In my classroom, we do a lot of play. I try to make all my learning activities fun. After a fun day of total math games one student said, "Wow, the day is already over? We didn't do any learning at all today!"
My students also face some challenges.
Due to our community demographics, they are facing emotional and social challenges, acute and chronic stressors and cognitive lags. In my classroom, I try to foster a feeling of community, calmness, safety, support, inclusion, self awareness and a belief in themselves.
My Project
I love my classroom. I do everything I can to make it feel fun and inviting. But truthfully my classroom is a cave. We have one small window in the back of the classroom so we don't get much natural light. The ceilings are very low. And of course we have a fantastic fluorescent lighting system that buzzes all the time.
I have many students with special needs that require a very calm safe feeling place.
The buzzing of the lights affect some of my children and even gives me a headache. I want them to walk into the room and feel at ease and connected to each other.
I believe having natural light instead of buzzing fluorescence lighting will give the room a more peaceful feel. Having full-length woodland scenes will help the students to be grounded and connected to each other.
