I teach at a STEM school on the south side of Chicago. Our primary focus is to prepare our students for the future using technology, math, and science to guide our instruction. Our students participate in engaging problem-solving projects, use math throughout the day, and imagine themselves in careers that will change the world!
Although our school is in a low-income area, our children are not poor!
They have a lot to offer the world and need the opportunity and experiences that students in more affluent communities are afforded.
Towards the end of the school year, students check out...completely. They are ready for summer to begin and frankly, so am I! Testing is over, we've cleaned out our desks and we're all counting down the minutes until we can sleep in and enjoy the long, lazy days of summer. Until then, teachers like me are pulling out our hair trying to keep students engaged until the school year ends.
This year, I've decided to bring summer camp to my classroom.
Most of my students will not get the opportunity to attend a traditional summer camp filled with arts and crafts, outdoor sports, tents, and my favorite: S'MORES! I want to bring them the excitement and joy of being part of this fulfilled experience- all of which they do not normally get to experience themselves. Our class needs supplies such as white tees for tie-dye, a tent, and fun outdoor games like horseshoes and cornhole (BAGS!!)
