Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The Global Citizen leadership class is based on community partnerships and real world solutions to problems. We are a class and club of action, hard work, inclusion and building positive relationships with others. Students are challenged to follow their dreams of a better world and are given the tools to see their leadership projects come to fruition. Our school is located in a very low socioeconomic area and our students are often in need of great amounts of community assistance just to survive. Our goal is to challenge students to rise up and to give back to their community, to be the givers of assistance and to build lifelong confidence through positive outcomes. The students are engaged in addressing the Sustainability Goals or SDGs that are grounded in challenging youth with creating community based solutions for world problems that involve water, climate change, homelessness, Foster care support, veterans, refugees, food scarcity, human trafficking, sustainable cities, peace and partnerships.

The Camp Congress Program helps girls to learn how to navigate the process for running for office, drafting bills, passing bills and making change in their communities. We need more youth to understand the process of actively leading and to return to our school to share their experiences. Change in the future will only come if we train young women early! This is an opportunity my students would likely not have otherwise, and it will be civics class come to life. They will learn how to express what they believe in, create bills that will improve society and how to make lasting change through compromise.

In Their Own Words

I would really like to know how to run for Congress and make real changes and solve the problems in my community. I have a voice and a point of view that is often not heard in the government at the current time. I want to make a difference and this project can help me do just that.

We are leaders on our campus and on a small scale in our immediate community. I want to know how to impact large amounts of people, to know how to run a campaign, to be inspired by other girls just like me who have already done it, and how I can bring my ideas to Washington!

This project is important to my community because not a lot of women of color represent our area. I think we have fresh ideas for issues and can solve problems that most people have given up on. We have energy, positivity and a great work ethic to get things done. We just need the chance to bring our ideas forward to others and connect with other leaders to make things happen in a youth movement!
