My Students

There is no typical day in my classroom. Every day is something new and exciting. The challenge, as our publication and production classes expand, is ensuring all students have access to the camera equipment needed to learn and succeed.

My students are the next generation of artists, journalists and storytellers.

Some are reporters and editors, others are photojournalists, broadcast journalists and filmmakers. My students are talented, ambitious and accomplished. They routinely win state and national awards. My students are as diverse as their Texas community. At our large public high school, about 35 percent of the students are considered "economically disadvantaged" and 46 percent are considered "at risk."

My Project

The journalism and video programs at our school are rapidly growing. We now have three teachers and two labs dedicated to these classes. While the growth is exciting, it also presents a financial challenge because the equipment used in these classes is not cheap. These two DSLR cameras would be used by students enrolled in several photography, journalism and video classes. Specifically, they would be used by advanced-level photographers who are enrolled in newspaper and yearbook classes, as well as beginning photographers enrolled in our new photo journalism class. Because these particular cameras are also capable of taking video, they will also be used in our intro and advanced-level video classes. There is a good chance they will also be used by our after-school broadcast journalism club.

Donating to this project will help improve the camera-to-student ratio in several journalism, photography and video classes, ensuring that all students have hands-on experience with the equipment on a regular basis.
