My Students
"If you are determined to learn, nothing and no one can stop you." The struggles of teaching at a Title I school are predictable. My students lack many things, but we do what we can with what we have.
My students come from diverse backgrounds with many aspiring to become the first in their families to attempt to attend college, to refugees from foreign countries trying to assimilate to a new culture.
Some of our students come to school with clothes that have been given or donated to them and sometimes the only meals they are guaranteed are at school. Roughly 90% of my students are economically impoverished and receive free or reduced-price lunch. However, the orchestra provides them with an opportunity to move beyond economic struggle and experience the beauty and freedom music provides.
My Project
New times call for new teaching methods. It would be great if I could have a tripod stand to act as a document camera in my home so that my kids can see musical examples and I can make notes in real time to help them count rhythms and see pitches on the staff. In addition to this, AirPods would be extremely useful in conducting virtual online lessons via zoom or other visual platforms and conferencing with students. These would be great assets for online learning in this new digital world which we've been forced to live.
