My students need instruments for their calypso unit. We study music from the Caribbean, primarily calypso style music, and we are in need of drums to create the rhythms.
Our elementary music program consists of two elementary schools, each containing approximately 450 students each. Our music program is supported, but a budget is not able to be established. One teacher is responsible for both schools, all 900 students in a total of five days. We make due with what we have and enjoy learning in any way we can!
Music is very important to brain development.
There are not many opportunities in our area for music exposure. Music class is sometimes all the students will get. We appreciate any and all support of our music learning!
My Project
In our classroom right now we have a few smaller hand drums and a few drums with sticks, but we do not have any drums from other world cultures. These drums will allow the students to learn new drumming techniques and the cultures from which they originated.
Rhythm drumming is a fun way to learn to read music notation!
Calypso music is exciting and full of culture. Our unit focuses on many cross-curricular topics as we journey through the Caribbean Sea. These drums will complement our lessons and will be used in our performances and concerts. They will be a great asset to our music class.
