My school serves around 300 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. We are located in Omaha, Nebraska and are a part of the largest urban school district in the state. My school has a very diverse population which includes a large population of ELL students as well as refugees. Ninety percent of our students also qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
I admire my students' perseverance to face all of the struggles they have at home and school as well as their appreciation for all of the opportunities given to them.
This is actually my third year teaching Library Media at this school, and I am beyond excited to continue teaching these avid learners. I cannot put into words just how sweet and caring many of my students are. They walk through the halls every morning with a smile, ready to learn, and they go above and beyond to help their fellow classmates who may be struggling due to a variety of reasons. Whether a student is upset because they miss their mom, or they do not quite understand the English language yet, there is always a peer willing to lend a helping hand.
My Project
In our school, these fidgets would actually play two different roles to support a larger variety of students. One way they would assist during lessons would be to help with focus for students who struggle keeping their bodies calm during a lesson. Another way they would be utilized is to support students struggling with anxiety or other emotions.
Many of the students which I teach deal with some very strong emotions, and during a time of crisis, I find that giving them something like a fidget can help because it allows the student a calming activity that can take their mind off of what has upset them.
Currently, I have a few fidgets available for students, but I do not have enough to supply the need in which my students have.
Therefore, I would greatly appreciate your support so that I cannot only make sure that any student who would benefit from one can use one in class. I can also make sure that they get one that best suits their needs.
