My Students
Students come from a rural area with multiple different economic and social backgrounds. However, a majority of our students come from a low economic standing and qualify for our free and reduced lunch program, with some of those students also qualifying for our weekend backpack program. Our school is small, approximately 300 students, serving students PreK-5th grade. We are a branch off of our large county-wide school district.
Our school may be small, but the students and teachers work hard to ensure success!
My students are always complimented upon by substitute teachers, visitors, and fellow parents for their exemplified manners and responsibility. My school is implementing Leader In Me, which is a leadership program geared to help our students become leaders in and out of the classroom.
As an educator, I strive to provide the best atmosphere for my students as I know, for some of them, this is their only safe place. I make it a priority to create a great bond with my students, this allows me to ensure that each of them receive what they need at school as well as at home.
My Project
My goal for this project is to help, withdrawal, and diffuse social and emotional behaviors that often follow kids to school and into their classrooms. These behaviors, at times, hinder students and their abilities to strive and be successful. Allowing students a way to display or change their behaviors in a positive and safe manner will help increase their participation in their academic engagement.
As educators, we strive to find and meet the diverse needs of ALL students, including those who simply need a way to express their social and emotional needs.
Given the tools, such as the sensory mechanisms listed in this project, these students' too can feel and display personal successes while remaining in the classroom as much as possible. Sensory tools, including calming bottles, sand timers, and liquid bubble dropping timers, allow students a way to remove themselves from an escalating situation and focus on something within a given time frame. Handheld sensory tools, such as stress balls, kinetic sand, and various different types of fidget tools will allow students to express themselves in a safe, controlled manner and to be able to retract their emotions and feelings. Weighted lap pads, oil diffuser, and calming cushions can serve as a way to help those who need that sense of a calm comforting anti-stress/anxiety to be able to focus their attention, feel safe, and be able to express themselves.
