My students need new classroom "friends" that will provide weighted input and aromatherapy to contribute to self-calming and indiscreet sensory regulation support.
I have the privilege of working with students ages 7-12 with a varying range of special needs. Students in my setting have challenges in the area of cognition, speech, motor, and/or behavioral skills. Many are also directly impacted by Autism or Sensory Processing Disorders. This influences how they interpret and interact with the world around them.
Each day, my students inspire and guide my classroom team as we work together to learn academic, social, and life skills.
We are a unique family that works together to meet each daily challenge head-on. No challenge is too large and no victory is too small. I love continually learning from my students as they show me the true meaning of perseverance.
My Project
For students in the Special Education setting, navigating the typical school and classroom setting is a challenge. There are bright lights, constant noises, strange smells...the list goes on. For a child with a sensory processing disorder, the constant barrage of information can contribute to over-stimulation and melt-downs. Through the incorporation of the snuggly sensory items requested below, we aim to lessen the stress placed on them during the typical school day.
Children with Sensory Processing Disorder need access to safe, calming tools and safe zones in the classroom where they can decompress and release sensory over-input in a safe manner.
The requested weighted critters with natural lavender aromatherapy would be welcome additions to our classroom. They would be beneficial in multiple areas of our classroom such as our “Sensory Haven” area. In Sensory Haven, you will find soft seating in the forms of beanbags and over-sized pillows. This allows students have access to an area where they can snuggle, stretch out, rock back and forth, roll on the ground, or seek other sensory input in a safe environment to release tension and stress. By also incorporating the requested weighted and cozy critters, students would be receiving maximum calming input to reduce stress and over-stimulation. Our cozy critters would also be portable and support the transition of this calming input to other areas if the classroom and school environment when needed.
The addition of the "Calming Cozy Classroom Critters" would greatly benefit my students as they navigate their daily challenges.
