My students reside in a rural community where a majority, about 73% are socioeconomically disadvantaged. About 35% of our student population is Hispanic, with another 12% identified as Native American.
My classroom of second graders consists of eight girls and seventeen very busy, active boys!
Many students become overwhelmed in a busy classroom. I would like to create a "Calming Corner." This would be an area where a student can feel free to visit and relax, engage their minds, or release energy.
My Project
A Take a Break Spot or a Calm Down Center is a great behavior management tool for the classroom. A calming corner teaches children self regulation. The corner will be a place where students can go if feeling overwhelmed in a busy classroom.
My large second grade class with twice as many boys as girls, could really benefit from this type of area.
Our classroom center will have a cozy bean bag chair and headphones where a student can unwind by listening to calming music. The center will also have fidget toys, puzzles and stress balls for those who need to relax or calm down.
