I have the honor of teaching music to almost every student at a Title I public Montessori school.

I teach music to 3- and 4-year olds through eighth-graders. This is my tenth year of teaching and my third year at my current school. I have around 20 to 26 students in each class at a time who come from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and are all very proud to go to our school, which serves as their home away from home.

Music reaches my students in ways that traditional academic classes do not. All my students are very enthusiastic to be in music class, singing and playing instruments.

My Project

Have you ever sat in a room with 20 young kiddos who were excited to play instruments and got a little overwhelmed with the noise? Well this happens to a lot of our kiddos. One minute they are enjoying the music and the next minute it's just too much for them.

We are asking for these liquid sensory tiles as an alternate place to sit for some of our friends who get very overwhelmed and over stimulated by all that is going on in our music room.

By sitting on these tiles, it will distract them from all of the "chaos" that is around them. Some of our friends like to play really loud on instruments or explore new ways to play them and our friends with sensitive ears sometimes feel overwhelmed.

In addition to using these tiles to help our friends, they can be used as inspiration to write a calming piece of music. We also tend to reference music as being colorful and these liquid tiles really give a good visual of that!
