This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a Pre-K through eighth-grade traditional school that offers various programs to support students' social and academic success. It is the first program to offer instruction in Mandarin Chinese. Students in grades Pre-K through eight receive Mandarin language instruction for thirty minutes each day. This coursework also increases students' global understanding of various Asian cultures and their influence on the global community. Our school also houses the International Newcomer Center (INC), a program that serves recently arrived middle school refugee students. In this program, students learn academic content while simultaneously acquiring the English language.
Each day, I start out with a hug, handshake or high-five from every one of my students, and greet them by their name, so they feel welcomed and valued as an individual and member of my class.
My students will break your heart with their life stories, yet bring a smile to your face and brighten your day. They are filled with a spirit like no other, despite any odds already against them, what they wear, or how they learn. Many come to school not only hungry for a good breakfast but also with a hunger for learning, stability and a structured day!
My Project
Colored, Liquid Filled Tiles will complete our Calming Corner! Our class calming corner is a place where students can face their feelings and learn how to put him/herself in a better place for learning. The calming corner helps students self regulate their feelings and emotions with various items and minds, and manage their emotions.
Students will use the Liquid Tiles in our Calming Corner to stand on and watch the the fluid move with every step taken, or with their fingers to push the fluid around.
Colored, Liquid Filled Tiles give students the calming affect similar to ocean waves. When students watch the colored liquid flow, it brings a sense of calm and helps the student become more centered and focused.
