My classroom is as unique as my students. My classroom, referred to as a Learning Center, hosts over 50 individual learners throughout the day. My learners each have unique learning and behavioral needs. The students I serve may be struggling readers, or may have difficulty understanding basic math, reading comprehension, or writing skills. They may struggle with executive functioning or sensory needs. These students are part of a school population that is made up of 62% students of poverty. 30% of the student population is English Language Learners and 10 different languages are spoken by our students. Students who attend the learning center have a unique set of challenges. However, these students enter a Learning Center focused on growth mindset, where students are encouraged to overcome challenges and work to their highest potential. Students work in small groups around the room where they receive small group or individualized instruction. Flexible seating options and a sensory friendly environment are critical. In my Dory themed classroom, students are encouraged to "Just keep swimming!"
My Project
Students with sensory processing needs may experience everyday sensations with more or less intensity than their peers without disabilities. These sensations affect my students' ability to use effective emotional regulation, attend and focus on instruction, and implement good behavior strategies. Adaptations to the classroom environment will help support student success.
A calming classroom environment encourages relaxed students, calms anxious feelings, and promotes positive learning.
The use of light diffusers will help to calm the harsh overhead fluorescent lights that can over-stimulate some students and make them want to avoid the classroom environment.
Conversely, some students require structured activity to meet their sensory seeking needs. These students who have trouble sitting still, keeping hands to themselves, or controlling noises and talking require a lot of input to help them learn. The ball chairs and wiggle seats help provide appropriate input to these students so they can effectively participate throughout the day.
These tools will help to create a sensory friendly space that promotes a balance between relaxation and calm and active engagement.
