I am a School Counselor to over 460 students in a K-5 school. The students in my school are from diverse backgrounds with many different interests. My students are caring, friendly, thoughtful, and empathetic. Much of my time is spent in the classrooms or in my office helping students with their character, learning skills, emotions, and problem solving. These skills are all important for their time in school as well as for outside of school.
I believe that students with these skills are able to maintain positive relationships and will meet with higher levels of success both in and out of the classroom.
In order to prepare my students for the social and academic interactions they will face, I am always looking to current literature to help deliver my lessons to individuals, small groups, and whole classes.
My Project
Over a year ago, I was fortunate to have my very first DonorsChoose.org project funded for Calming Caddies! I was able to create this wonderful resource for the 36 classrooms in my building. The caddies were met with excitement and, over the past year and a half, TONS of use! In light of that, I am looking to replenish and update the caddies for the upcoming school year so that students can continue to utilize the caddies when they need a safe space.
Students and teachers have both shared with me how the Calming Caddies have had a positive impact in their daily routine.
They have become a safe place in the classrooms for students to process strong feelings, take a break, or utilize a fidget at their desk to help with concentration. Students are also aware of the difference between a "toy" and a "tool." With that in mind, the caddies have had a lot of wear and tear with some of the items. With this project, I am looking to replenish items and add in some new ones to keep the Calming Caddies current and fresh for all of my students.
The original project is very near and dear to my heart because I was able to literally reach every single classroom in my K-5 school. I am hopeful that I can continue to do so through this project. My project will be used to purchase additional stress balls, fidgets, magic wands, pinwheels, and stretch strings for the caddies already located in all of the classrooms.
